The Structured Distance to Normality of an Irreducible Real Tridiagonal Matrix

The problem of computing the distance in the Frobenius norm of a given real irreducible tridiagonal matrix T to the algebraic variety of real normal irreducible tridiagonal matrices is solved. Simple formulas for computing the distance and a normal tridiagonal matrix at this distance are presented. The special case of tridiagonal Toeplitz matrices also is considered.

The structured distance to normality of banded Toeplitz matrices

Matrix nearness problems have been the focus of much research in linear algebra; see, e.g., [8,9,19,32]. In particular, characterizations of the algebraic variety of normal matrices and distance measures to this variety have received considerable attention; see [10,11,13,14,16,17,23,25–27]. Normal matrices are of interest because their eigenvalues are optimally conditioned and their singular va...

An application of Fibonacci numbers into infinite Toeplitz matrices

The main purpose of this paper is to define a new regular matrix by using Fibonacci numbers and to investigate its matrix domain in the classical sequence spaces $ell _{p},ell _{infty },c$ and $c_{0}$, where $1leq p

Toeplitz matrices: spectral properties and preconditioning in the CG method

We consider multilevel Toeplitz matrices Tn(f) generated by Lebesgue integrable functionsf defined over I, I = [−π, π), d ≥ 1. We are interested in the solution of linear systems withcoefficient matrix Tn(f) when the size of Tn(f) is large. Therefore the use of iterative methodsis recommended for computational and numerical stability reasons. In this note we focus ourattenti...

Spectral analysis and preconditioning techniques for radial basis function collocation matrices

Meshless collocation methods based on radial basis functions lead to structured linear systems which, for equispaced grid points, have almost a multilevel Toeplitz structure. In particular, if we consider partial differential equations (PDEs) in two dimensions then we find almost (up to a “low-rank” correction given by the boundary conditions) two-level Toeplitz matrices, i.e., block Toeplitz w...
